FEBRUARY WITH ABBY!
Hi it's Abby here,
It’s Monday 20th February and I’m sitting at my desk reflecting on this year’s County Champs. In summary, I did 17 races I got 9 personal best’s (PB’s) and 7 medals – 3 golds, 2 silvers and 2 bronzes. The first weekend (21st and 22nd January) was my best weekend, I did 7 races and I got 5 personal bests and 4 medals. Also, on this first weekend I had one of my three focus races; 100m butterfly, I got a big PB and the Gold! I was really happy with how I raced, the final was quite tense because I could see both of my opponents in the lanes next to me through the whole race! After the first 50 they were both in front of me, but I managed to pull it back, my strength is always in the back end of the race. On the Sunday however I had both of my 400m races. I got a PB in my 400m individual medley and won the gold but I didn’t PB in my 400m freestyle. The longer distances aren’t my favourite distances as I find them harder to swim. The races that I had in my first weekend were a wide range of distances and I was happy with the outcome. My second weekend wasn’t as good as my first one; I did 9 races and I got 4 PB’s. I had 2 focus races in my second weekend, 200 fly and 200 IM. Although I won the gold for my 200 fly the time wasn’t the time I wanted, I wanted to go under 2.20 but I got 2.25 and a small PB. My 200 IM was better than my fly as I got a 2 second PB. I was quite happy with my time though as I felt all elements of my race were executed well. I need to work on my backstroke for the long course season as my technique has gone a bit, and it showed at the Counties as I didn’t get any PB’s in the backstroke, however I was happy with my breastroke as I PB’d in every event. My technique has improved and I am happy with it. Finally, just last Saturday I had my 800m freestyle and got a big PB, unfortunately I just missed out on a medal by 0.2 of a second! Hopefully next time I can get one. So, overall I would say that I have had a ‘decent’ (our head coach uses that phrase!) but not great Counties this year and there are definitely things that I need to work on and improve for the Midland Championships at the end of May. My next blog will be the same time next March, I will tell you how my training and ‘comps’ have been going on my build up to the Midlands!
Huge congratulations to Abby and everyone at Grantham Swimming Club
