Abby's September Post!

If you missed her other blogs, Abby is a young competitive all round swimmer who trains in our swimwear. She won an impressive gold medal in the Butterfly at the ASA Nationals last summer and reached the British Championships this summer.  Here is her latest blog post....

Hi Abby here, it’s Saturday 16th September – we’ve started the new swimming season. But before news of the new season what about the end of last…,? I had the British Championships on Thursday 27th July, I had qualified to swim in the 200 fly. My warm up felt really good, I felt excited and full of energy. We did practice 50m lengths to prepare us for the race and my times were just what I wanted – very low 31 seconds. After warm up I dried off and got ready for my race. I was feeling excited but quite nervous. My heat was early in the morning. As soon I got out onto the blocks, I felt quite overwhelmed, everything looked so big and I went into a sort of ‘shell’. I think I just realised that it felt very different being at the British Championships than the English Champs Where I swam and won last year), everything felt a lot more prestigious and I could tell that this was the top end of the spectrum in swimming. On short course times I was seeded to make the final, but my race didn’t go to plan, I was way off the pace and even outside my PB so I missed out on the final! The top 10 go through to the final and I came 12th. I have learnt a lot from my experience at the British; I have learnt that I need to work on my mental preparation especially towards racing and I need to improve my ‘all-in-attitude’. So, now I am really looking forward to this season, I am excited to see what I can achieve as I reached the British Champs last season so I know that I can do it again this season and perhaps even get a medal!
For now though I am concentrating on the Inter-Counties Championships – I have been picked to represent Lincolnshire again to swim the 100M Fly. The Inter Counties is like swimming at a National level competition as all the best swimmers in the country are picked to represent their counties, so the standard is really high and it’s back at Ponds Forge where I swam in the British champs – time to get revenge?!
Goodbye for now, and I hope you all have a wonderful September.
Abby xx
